Google.org is supporting the CyberSafe Foundation with a three‑year grant for Resilio Africa, a cybersecurity resilience initiative across Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa. The program will provide over 200 Critical Community Institutions (CCIs) with free cybersecurity tools, risk assessments, threat intelligence, incident‑response playbooks, and more than 10,000 hours of pro bono expert consulting. Resilio Africa also offers tiered training for executives, IT teams, and frontline staff to strengthen human and technical defenses.

Who is affected

This initiative targets CCIs, including schools, healthcare facilities, local government agencies, and nonprofits, that often lack sufficient cybersecurity resources. The program is expected to protect over 2 million people and secure more than 15 million public records, shielding these institutions from ransomware, phishing, and other cyber threats.

Why CISOs should care

Resilio Africa underscores a growing global cybersecurity challenge: vulnerabilities in organizations with limited cybersecurity maturity. According to INTERPOL and the International Telecommunication Union, Africa saw a 23% increase in ransomware attacks in 2023, while more than 60% of countries fall into the “low commitment” category for cybersecurity readiness. The initiative highlights the need for proactive resilience strategies, particularly for institutions handling large volumes of sensitive data.

3 Practical Actions for CISOs

  1. Benchmark Third‑Party and Community Risk: Assess the cybersecurity posture of critical partner institutions and community-facing systems, especially in regions with emerging digital infrastructures.
  2. Build Scalable Incident Response Playbooks: Use Resilio Africa’s frameworks as a model to develop incident response plans that are practical for resource-constrained organizations and address common threats like ransomware and phishing.
  3. Invest in Capacity Building: Prioritize ongoing cybersecurity awareness and skills development for leadership, IT teams, and general staff. Structured, tiered training can significantly improve threat recognition and response readiness across all organizational layers.
